Urban Legend | Mothman

Mothman

The Mothman is described as a human-sized creature, or larger, with red eyes and moth wings. With the possibility of this creature having a pair of eyes on his chest. He is described as a 7 foot (2.1 m) tall creature, with long wings and large red eyes. He has an unusual shout.

On November 15, 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant, Roger and Linda Scarberry, and Steve and Mary Mallette, along with their young cousin, Lonnie Button, traveled late at night driving a Scarberry car. They crossed West Virginia Ordnance Works, an abandoned World War II Dinamite factory, about seven miles north of Point Pleasant, on the 2,500 acre (10 km²) McClintic Wildlife Management Area, when they saw two red lights in the shadows by an old generator electricity near the factory gate. They stopped the car, and reportedly found that the lights were bright red eyes of a large animal, "shaped like a human, but bigger, maybe as high as six and a half feet, with a big victory folded on his back," according to Roger Scarberry. Terrified, they drove towards Route 62, where the creature was supposed to chase them at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The Mothman sightings were again reported on January 11, 1967, floating on the city bridge, and several times in the same year. Fewer Mothman sightings were reported after the collapse of the city bridge, Perak Bridge, when 46 people died. The Silver Bridge, so named because of its aluminum paint, is a suspension bridge of an eyebar chain that connects the cities of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio, on the Ohio River. This bridge was built in 1928, and collapsed on December 15, 1967. Investigation of bridge ruins points to single-eye failure in the suspension chain due to small manufacturing defects. There was a rumor that the Mothman appeared before the impending disaster and seemed to be trying to warn people about them. Mothman was never again seen in Point Pleasant after the destruction of the Silver Bridge.

Here are some photos of this creature's appearance.
